Delegate numbers are restricted to 10 persons to ensure opportunities for personalised development and discussion

Changes to the ways in which students are examined at GCSE have placed an increasing emphasis on memory skills, using both long and short-term memory. Whilst some courses will continue to allow students to demonstrate their learning outside the constraints of an exam there are, increasingly, areas of the curriculum where students must learn, memorise and retrieve knowledge and formulae for use during exams. Some students learn techniques naturally but many students need these skills taught explicitly; developed from Year 7 onwards. Learning such skills early on allows students to focus on learning the techniques that suit their personal learning styles, maximising their effect by the time GCSEs are taken.

Target audience for this training:

This one day course is designed for SENCOs and all adults working with Class teachers who work with a range of students both in the classroom and through additional support.

Training areas covered:

  • What do we mean by short term and working memory. How do these skills impact on exams, including the new GCSE Maths and English and how can we maximise their efficiency in our students?
  • How do learning styles relate to differing memory techniques?
  • How can we embed memory training into personalised detaching in the classroom?
  • Explicit teaching of memory skills: The number peg system, story telling, visualising and verbalising top retrieve key vocabulary, mnemonics , Apps to support revision skills, mind mapping.

 

This training day is delivered by:

Jane Dupree. Jane is a teacher with over 25 years of experience, teaching children with Specific Learning Difficulties, including dyslexia and dyspraxia and delivering staff training throughout England. Her book ‘Help Students Improve their Study Skills’ has 2 chapters dedicated to memory, revision and exam skills.
